Last night, I was bored. This happens when there is no soccer matches going on.. Luckily, there were some Euro qualifiers and friendlies that was going on. I watched the Wales-Czech Republic game.
I watched the game mainly because, that was Giggsy's last international match. He announced his retirement (earlier in the week) from international soccer in order to prolong his career with Manchester United. I wasn't overwhelmed with emotions as compared to the day some 6 years ago when Peter Schemeichel retired from the Danish soccer team.
Giggsy and Schemeichel are two great United players. Giggsy excels in the midfield department while Schemeichel in the Great Dane who never fails to protect his goal well. Giggsy, was this loyal chap who stood by Wales despite the failure to represent the country in any Euro Finals or the World Cup Finals. He refused to play for England despite his eligibility. Have you guys ever wonder what difference the England squad will be with Giggsy in the team?
Schemeichel was the one who attracted me to Man United some 11 years ago. And, to the Danish team as well where I got to know about the talented Laudrup brothers, Michael and Brian. But all that is history, I supports the Dutch team now.
Anyways, Giggsy played really well last night in his swan song match. He almost scored on two occasions. One was from a 30 m freekick and the other was when he beat about 4 defenders only to see the ball hit the bar. It reminds you of his heyday for United. In the end, the game ended in a draw.
As his international career came to a close, I hope he will be able to go on and be the most decorated player in history with United. In his bags are already 9 EPL medals, a Champs League medal and FA Cups medals. I am sure more is yet to come as the new season open its curtains this August.
